Why Desk Height Causes Wrist Pain During Long Calls

You settle in for a two-hour Zoom call, coffee ready, notes open, feeling prepared. By the 45-minute mark, a dull ache starts creeping across the top of your wrist. You shift your hand position. You rest your elbow on the armrest. The ache persists. By the end of the call, your wrist feels like you spent the morning swinging a hammer.

Most people blame the keyboard. Or the mouse. Or simply “typing too much.” But here’s what actually happened: your desk height forced your wrists into an extended position for the entire duration of that call. Every minute you sat there, your forearm muscles worked overtime to hold your hands above the keys. The tendons running through your carpal tunnel compressed against the desk edge. And because video calls keep your hands relatively static—hovering, typing brief comments, clicking mute—the strain accumulated without the natural micro-movements that normally redistribute pressure during active work.

This is not a typing injury. This is a positioning injury. And the root cause is almost always desk height.

How Desk Height Hijacks Your Wrist Position

Your body is remarkably adaptable. It will contort itself to meet whatever surface you give it. When a desk sits too high relative to your seated height, your shoulders shrug upward to lift your arms. Your elbows flare outward. Lower the desk itself if it has adjustable legs. Many modern desks include this feature; check if yours does before buying accessories.

Use a lap desk or portable surface placed across your chair arms if you work primarily on a laptop during calls. This brings the keyboard to you rather than forcing you to reach up.

Fixing a Desk That Is Too Low

Less common but equally problematic, a low desk forces you to hunch forward and bend your wrists downward into flexion. This position also narrows the carpal tunnel, though from the opposite direction.

Raise the desk by placing sturdy blocks, risers, or furniture legs under the base. Ensure the setup is stable before placing equipment on it.

Lower your chair so your arms approach the desk from above rather than below. Use a cushion if the seat becomes too low relative to your monitor.

Pad the desk edge if you must rest your forearms on a hard surface. A simple foam pipe insulation sleeve, split lengthwise and wrapped over the edge, eliminates contact stress without looking unprofessional on camera.

Quick Fixes Before Your Next Call

  • Drop the keyboard feet. Those little plastic legs force your wrists into extension. Type with the keyboard flat.
  • Move the keyboard 8–10 cm back from the desk edge to align with biomechanical research.
  • Float, don’t plant. Your wrists should hover above the rest, not press into it.
  • Raise your monitor so the top sits at eye level, preventing the hunch that raises your shoulders.

When to Take the Pain Seriously

Occasional wrist soreness after a long day usually resolves with rest and setup adjustments. But certain symptoms indicate that the problem has progressed beyond simple ergonomics and may require medical attention:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, or middle fingers, especially waking you at night
  • Weakness when gripping objects or performing fine motor tasks like buttoning a shirt
  • Pain that persists for more than two weeks despite ergonomic changes
  • Swelling or visible changes in wrist contour
  • Radiating pain that travels up the forearm toward the elbow or shoulder

These symptoms may indicate carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, or other repetitive strain injuries. A randomized controlled trial published in 2021 found that ergonomic workstation adjustments significantly reduced wrist and hand pain intensity over 36 weeks, but the researchers noted that pain gradually increased again after 24 weeks without ongoing monitoring. This suggests that ergonomic fixes work, but only if you maintain them.

The human body is not fragile. It is adaptable—sometimes too adaptable. When your desk is two inches too high, your wrists compensate. They bend. They extend. They compress.
